On sait encore peu de choses sur ce territoire qu'est l'île de Reil. Découverte par le médecin allemand Johann Christian Reil, qui en donna le premier une description en 1796, cette région, située au fond du sillon latéral, en profondeur, dans les replis du cortex, est également appelée Insula ou Cortex insulaire. Il s'agit d'une zone isolée, une enclave, -une “insularité”-, comme une île, au milieu du cerveau.
Elle serait, d’après les recherches scientifiques, le siège de certaines fonctions limbiques, telles l'intégrité physique, la gestion des interdits, ou encore le dégoût ou la dépendance. Mais surtout, on présume qu’elle serait le foyer de la conscience.

La conscience, que ce soit d'un point de vue philosophique, psychologique ou scientifique, reste l'un des concepts les plus difficiles à définir. A la fois perceptuelle, intuitive, émotionnelle, elle est la relation intériorisée avec le monde et avec soi-même. Sorte de ressac, de rumeur subjective, certains parlent d'un “arrière-plan en nous qui voit”.

L'idée de conscience, l'idée que chacun puisse avoir une île, au fond de soi, et que cette île serait l'épicentre de notre relation au monde, m'a amenée à réaliser ce travail. Il regroupe différents corpus d'images, qui auraient, malgré leurs origines à première vue disparates, ce point commun : chacune parlerait d'un espace mental, d'un territoire à investir.
Ainsi, comme le cerveau fait de méandres, les images voyagent, glissent, se déplacent dans un tout fluctuant. Certaines images, retaillées, découpées, inventent un nouveau territoire. Dans les jeux d’échos, de dialogues entre les images, je cherche le point de bascule, où il serait question seulement de ressentir.

We know few things about this territory that is the Reil Island. It could be, according to scientific research, the center of limbic functions, such as physical integrity, the management of interdicts, or even dependence. But more important above all, it is presumed that it could be the focus of consciousness.

Consciousness, whether from a philosophical, psychological or scientific point of view, remains one of the most difficult concepts to define. At once perceptual, intuitive, emotional, it is the internalized relationship with the world and with oneself. Kind of surf, wave, subjective rumor, some people speak about a "background inside us, which sees ».

The idea of consciousness, the idea that everyone can have an island, deep inside, and that this island would be the epicenter of our relationship to the world, led me to realize this work. It brings together different corpuses of images, which would have, despite their disparate origins, this common point : each would speak of a mental space, a territory to invest.

The idea of resurgence, subjective memory, emptiness then guided my research. The notion of slippage has also imposed itself, in the articulation of this work: to move the image of its register, to find its tipping point towards a new language. In echo to the word "cortex" - whose Latin origin means bark, and the fact that the brain is made of meanders - sinuosities - the pictures are installed in sets of plans, like a sort of labyrinth, in which they interact as sequences. It is a question of the spatiality, of physical reality. Some images are repeated, like the ideas that we re-write, others have switched (left-right, up-down).
